Good customer service and rising to any challenge are key priorities for the Corrotherm International team. We always work hard to deliver exactly what our clients need, which is why we continue to attract exciting projects time and again.

One particularly standout project that we were involved in was for a thermowell assembly for an ammonia synthesis reactor in the fertiliser industry. Corrotherm supplied components for the installation, which was fabricated in India for its intended end use in Oman.

This type of large installation throws up its own unique problems. Not least because of the temperatures involved – the reactor can go up to 400-800 degrees Celsius. When working in extreme environments like this, it is important that the right alloy is selected for the job, one that can withstand the heat and the pitfalls that are associated with it. The presence of carbon monoxide and hydrogen can induce metal dusting at elevated temperatures and can lead to failure after very short exposure. The process designer of the equipment therefore chose the INCONEL Alloy 693, because it offers superior resistance to metal dusting in these high-temperature atmospheres.

INCONEL Alloy 693 has a high chromium content, which is why it can significantly reduce or eliminate the risk of this metal dusting. It is therefore popular in synfuel and petrochemical processes, as well as other high-temperature environments. This alloy also offers good resistance to other forms of high-temperature corrosion.

However, it can be hard to find stock of this alloy, which is the problem that our customer was facing. It needed bespoke forged and machine parts for critical thermowell assembly and was finding it difficult to source a small quantity in various sizes and shapes. Corrotherm was approached to help resolve this sourcing problem, and we were able to not only source the raw materials needed, but also go the extra step and supply the finished components to the customer’s requirements. These included round bar, tubes and plates for a thermowell, which were all bespoke to the customer’s exact specifications.

In order to be prepared, we stocked excess materials from this project. This means that we have been able to easily offer repeat sales of bespoke products, as well as tubular products like ferrules for super critical boiler parts in the same INCONEL Alloy 693.

This project is a great example of how we work closely with our customers to understand their need and help find a suitable solution to problems. Our team has a wealth of experience in the field of engineering, and our understanding of the manufacturing process was key to helping work through these particular challenges. We pride ourselves on building strong relationships with our customers, as this means that we can work together with them successfully on current and future projects.

If you have your own project that you wish to discuss, then please contact our experienced sales team and we can talk through the challenges and help find the right solutions and grades for you.
